“The world cannot endure the thought of
God’s sovereignty and electing love."
- F. W. Grant
"Election is more than just foreseeing
who would eventually believe; it is the action of choosing
those who would believe."
- Charles Ryrie, A Survey of Bible
Doctrine
"Election is, therefore: (1) the
sovereign act of God in grace whereby certain persons are
chosen from among mankind for Himself (Jn 15:19)."
- Schofield
Study Bible, annotation on 1 Pet.5:13.
"He chooses us, not because we believe, but
that we may believe; lest we should say that we first chose
him."
- Augustine
God’s choice of believers always precedes
and enables their choice of Him (cf. John 15:16; Acts
13:46–48; Rom. 9:15–21; 2 Thess. 2:13; 2 Tim. 1:8,9; 2:10; 1
Pet. 1:1,2)
- MacArthur Study Bible
God didn’t draw straws; He didn’t look down
the corridor of time to see who would choose Him before He
decided. Rather, by His sovereign will He chose who would be
in the Body of Christ. The construction of the Greek verb
for “chose” indicates God chose us for Himself. That means
God acted totally independent of any outside influence. He
made His choice totally apart from human will and purely on
the basis of His sovereignty.
- John MacArthur Jr.
Divine sovereignty, human responsibility and
the free and universal offer of mercy are all found in
Scripture, and though we are unable to harmonize by our
logic, they all ought to have a place in our minds.
- W.G. Blaikie (quoted by William MacDonald in his,
Believers Bible Commentary)
"We, of all His hand created,
Objects of such grace alone,
BY ETERNAL LOVE ELECTED,
Destined now to share His throne…"
- Hymn by Thomas Kelly,
